Mao Xie, better known as “Hairy Crab” Oolong, is a traditional oolong from Anxi County in Fujian Province, China; a region celebrated for producing some of China’s most distinctive oolong teas.
Its memorable name comes directly from the leaf. Mao Xie translates as “Hairy Crab,” referring to the fine hairs found on the tea leaves, some of which may become visible on the surface of the liquor during brewing.
But the name is only the beginning of what makes this tea worth discovering.
Compared with its famous Anxi counterpart, Tie Guan Yin, Mao Xie offers a thicker, sweeter character with less emphasis on overt floral notes.
